Black Chokeberry, Aronia melanocarpa

Growth Characteristics Black chokeberry is a deciduous shrub that spreads freely and suckers profusely; growing 3-8 feet tall and 3-6 feet wide. The black/purple fruit is edible though very astringent and is produced from 5-6 flowered clusters that bloom in late spring. The leaves turn red in the fall. The top is often rounded and upright; it tends to become leggy with age. Plant 3-6 feet apart. Is low maintenance and a fast grower.
