Name: White Turtlehead – Chelone glabra

Growth Characteristics  White turtlehead plants grow up to 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide in preferred conditions. The creamy white snapdragon like flowers blooms appear on 6-8 inch stems in dense clusters and open from bottom to top in late summer to fall. The common name comes from the shape of the flower which resembles a turtle head. Plant 1-3 feet apart.  White turtlehead grows at a moderate rate and requires little maintenance. Pinching stem tips in spring will produce a bushier plant.

Hardiness: Climate zones 3-8

Light Requirements: Partial shade/sun is preferred.

Water Needs:  Prefers moist conditions, can tolerate wet soils and temporary flooding.  In sunny locations provide mulch to retain moisture.

Soil Preference:  Moist soils, high organic content and neutral to basic pH.

DISEASE, PEST, AND DEER RESISTANCE

No serious pests or diseases. Not deer resistant.

SITE CONSIDERATIONS

Use white turtlehead in borders or groups along ponds or streams. Works well in native pollinator gardens and rain gardens. Naturalized wet areas.
