PLANT INFORMATION
Plant Size: 1 Gallon
Name: Eastern Bluestar – Amsonia tabernaemontana
Type: Perennial
Growth Characteristics: Eastern bluestar will grow 2-3 feet tall and wide in an erect clumping form. Clusters of light blue, star-like flowers open in late spring atop erect, leafy stems. Flowers in second year of growth. Too much shade may cause the plant to flop and need staking. Cutting the stems back after flowing will create a more rounded, neater appearance. It is a slow grower that is easy to maintain. Plant 2-3 feet apart.
Hardiness: Climate zones 3-9
Light Requirements: Full and partial sun
Water Needs: Plant in well-drained moist to occasionally wet soils. Drought tolerant once
established.
Soil Preference: It tolerates a wide range of soil textures with good drainage and a neutral pH.
DISEASE, PEST AND DEER RESISTANCE
Resistant to damage by deer and other herbivores due to the foliage containing a toxic white latex.
SITE CONSIDERATIONS
Use eastern bluestar in borders or in groups in open woodlands, native, pollinator, cutting or cottage gardens.
Value to Wildlife and Insects
